Welcome to the website that lists the widest source of speedway champions !

Background.

This website aims to present all the national championship winners of speedway countries, major and minor, if not on one sheet then on one website at least. Although originally generated on just 2 documents, - major nations and lesser speedway nations - , limitations of a free ads-free website make it necessary for legible website presentation to present the larger documents in multi-page scroll-thru format. ( See last tab, 'About/Contact' - "Advise for viewing tables".)   Results of other important speedway competitions which have been collated over time are also to be found on this website.

In addition to National title-holders, Youth and Junior champions, - U21,U15 etc. - , State, (Australia,) regional,(UK) and other trophy winners have also been included. For Britain, a number of significant regional, - London, Midlands, Scotland - , and League Riders Championships are covered as well as Golden Helmet trophy meetings, in Britain, Europe and beyond.

In some countries the national licensing body has changed over time, not all with FIM affiliation. Notwithstanding, championships under the auspices of the controlling authorities recognised by the sport within its country are used and included here. Presently in both Canada and the USA at least two authorities co-exist. Hence two national championships are run in the States yet riders are able to participate in both competitions with impunity. Billy Hamill was the winner of both its AMA and SRA national speedway titles in 2002. The US champions listed on this website for the years since the present duality (from 1998 onward) are those of the current FIM-affiliated body, the American Motorcyclist Association, (AMA). In Canada for the last decade there has been both a Series and an Individual (one-off meeting) national championship title within the affiliated body, CMA, though prior to 1980 the 'Speedway' class was unrecognised. There is also a non-affiliated body, CMRC, that sanctions speedway in Canada. South Africa has had a history of authority changes and resultant conflicts which have had repercussions not only in the errors and confusion of championship winners to be found in speedway archives and websites but also back in the UK which resulted in the banning of riders and track closure.

For most of the championships venues have also been included in the tables. This helps on occasions where ambiguity may exist, to enable clarification, such as in the case of South African champions. So as not to lose the outcome of much hard work on the part of several enthusiasts, the comprehensive SA data has been given its own page and included here for the benefit of posterity, (i.e. to save others the trawl, and to justify the inclusion of the riders named in the SA national table of the prime list !) Australia also has its own page in order to embrace the detail of the multiplicity of champions pre- and post-war that otherwise would appear overlooked but whose names are readily cited when referring to Aussie pioneers. Its State championship winners are also shown. Elsewhere only 500cc class winners have been included. (See footnotes to 'Major Champs' table.)

The ultimate speedway champion is, of course the World Champion, and though widely available on many sites and publications, the list of speedway World Champions is also included here, for completeness and in recognition of those riders' achievements. Unofficial forerunners of the FIM speedway world championship are also covered.

Having commonality of riders within the sports, the Speedway World Championships' 1-2-3s, are supplemented with the Long Track and  Ice Racing World 1-2-3s, so that a single reference point is again achieved on one website.

Finally, though primarily about individual champion riders, a page has been included giving British league championship winning teams and runners-up for each of the 80 years that team racing has operated in the UK.
